Maunby

Information about Maunby

Maunby is a small village, population 150, standing  on the River Swale. It is 5 miles SW of Northallerton and a similar distance NE of Thirsk.

Unlike the other villages it is part of the Kirby Wiske parish – another village 1 mile to the south.

There is no road crossing of the Swale with the village ending as a cul de sac around the large attractive village green.

There is a crossing of the River Swale for walkers, horse riders and cyclists over the former railway line with a station at Maunby gates.
This formed part of the Northallerton to Harrogate  line closed in 1956.

Maunby Hall is the home of the Hill Walker family and stands  on the outskirts of the village. It is  Grade 2 listed and dates from the early 18th century. The Village has a second small village green which contains a war memorial.

This is not just a commuter village with a large trainer of racehorses using part of the former railway line, north of the village as gallops. The village does have two small churches.

St Michaels & All Angels

Is in the centre of the village and is part part of the joint parishes of Ainderby Steeple & Kirby Wiske. More details including service times on on website  www.lowerswalechurches.org.uk

Maunby Methodist Church is a very small and cosy tucked away just off the village green.

It was built in 1855 – it is said with the help of women, from the village, carrying bricks in their aprons.

The village has no shop and unfortunately The Buck Inn has now closed.
