Information about South Otterington

South Otterington is in the Domesday Book. The name is Old English  after a person named Otter with “ton” meaning settlement. It is on the A167 and is part of the former Great North road from Boroughbridge to Northallerton.

The village with a population of 350 is 5 miles south of Northallerton on the east bank of the River Wiske. The east coast main line passes to the east of the village where there was the former Otterington station. There is a former mill in the village which was mentioned as far back as 1359. Otterington Hall is located North east of the village

The oldest properties on the A167 in Big Otterington surround a small village green with a central tree. There is a larger green in Little Otterington where the Village Hall is located.

There was a school from 1856 which later became the village hall.

The new  St Andrews CE School opened in 1993 with the closure of small schools in Newby Wiske and nearby Thornton le Moor.
