Newby Wiske

Information about Newby Wiske

Newby Wiske, 5 miles south of Northallerton,  is a very attractive estate village on the east bank of the River Wiske. It is connected to South Otterington, on the opposite bank by the impressive stone bridge built by John Carr.

There was been a settlement here for centuries and west of the village is the site of the former manor house of the Talbot family. However most the village was built in Victorian times by William Rutson, the son of a Liverpool merchant, as houses for his estate workers.

He built and lived at Newby Wiske Hall which is Grade 2 listed and stands in the centre of the village in extensive grounds. Until recently it has formed the headquarters of North Yorkshire Police.

William Rutson also built a small school as a memorial to his daughter. It closed in 1993 with the children moving to the new school in South Otterington.

The village is a conservation area on either side of the road from South Otterington to Warlaby. The houses on the east side of the road have extensive gardens down to the riverside. The village has “lost” both its shop and Methodist Chapel.
